Comment: I was a bit disappointed when you didn't mention Shane Acker's 9, but you did a wonderful job with the rest of the animated films mentioned in the list :)

Comment: Personally I also prefered "The Princess & the Frog" to "Up," but both are very good films, and 2009 was a very strong year for animation... despite a few hiccups... the only thing I wanted from "The Princess & the Frog" was MORE!!! I wanted more of Dr. Facilier, especially. I think if we had had a 2 hour flick that played up "the good Dr." a bit more, we would have had a total box office smash!!! Well, hopefully hand drawn will continue in the US... even though Princess was just shy of being as much as we all wanted.
I disagree with you, I think Ponyo was really poorly dubbed, which is dissappointing as I think Disney usually does a good job... I blame too many "celebrities"/non-voice actors... also the story was... unfocused...
Coraline was all right, but the book was way better, and I read the book before I saw the film... it was too scary for kids under about 8 I think...
Fun Facts about "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" ... well the first one isn't a fact... but... I gotta say of all the Dahl adaptations this one FEELS the most like Dahl... and now... 2 Disney songs were used in the film... I wonder how they managed that? The 2 are: Love, from Disney's Robinhood (the animated one), and "The Davy Crockett Theme Song"
Seeing "Astro Boy" movie made me wonder about the original more... it also made me realize how much Steven Spielberg ripped off Astro Boy when he made A.I. ... they're practically the same story... and I don't care that they are both based on Pinocchio... they still look too similar for comfort...
I feel the Toy Story films seem to get better each time... by that I mean I think Toy Story 3 is the best, followed by Toy Story 2, and then the original... unusual for a series, which usually gets worse over the course of more films...
I gotta say... I HATE 3D!!!!!!!!!
I think you might have missed one or two movies on this list...

Comment: Here are the animated movies I've seen in theatres of 2009. Up, Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaur, and of course, The Princess And The Frog. Like I said, there should be more movies like it! I have watched Ponyo on DVD a few months ago and I am planning on watching Fantastic Mr. Fox soon.

Comment: funn to know.
I agree that the design is very similar in P&F, Bambi, L&T but the animation is also very similar to Treasure Planet in my opinion.

Comment: The animation in The Princess & the Frog was very similar to Bambi in my opinion.
That Fellow: Not surprising, considering the animators took a lot of inspiration from Bambi for the bayou scenes (and "Lady and the Tramp" for the city). :-)Name: villains are awsome

Comment: I was also wery impresst by the variation in animated movies in 2009. there were dark-edge movies(like "Coraline" and "9"),handdrawn animated musicals (The Princess & the Frog) and CGI comedies ("Ice Age 3" & "Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs"). Usuly just one genera dominates the media eche year & mabe it will come a new era soon. I personly hop it will be much darker movies like in the early 80s. what do you think?

I really hate how this commenting system doesn't allow for paragraphs by the way; it made my list of films look rather messy. Sorry about that.

Comment: Niffiwan: I don't recall saying that it was dead, just that Disney had abandoned the format and they managed to successfully bring their old style back with The Princess and the Frog.

Comment: Thanks for the video.
Ponyo looks fantastic. I've got to see it sometime.
Mr. Fox wasn't just a case of American accents making it lack Britishness - the whole film had a sort of American hipster sensibility to it. Someone unfamiliar with the original would have no way of knowing that it was supposed to be British. I thought it was still a pretty good film.
Here is a list of the 2009 animated features I saw in theatres and my ratings for them (most of them at the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema in November):
Coraline (2009, USA) - 8
Up (2009. USA) - 8
Mary and Max (2009, Australia) - 9
Den rozhdeniya Alisy (2009, Russia) - 7
First Squad: The Moment of Truth (2009, Russia/Japan/Canada) - 6/7
Fedot the Hunter (2009, Russia) - 7/8
Metropia (2009, Scandinavia) - 6/7
Technotise: Edit and I (2009, Serbia) - 8
L.A. Dolce Vita (Immigrants) (2009, USA) - 6/7
Brendan and the Secret of Kells (2009, Ireland/France/Belgium) - 7/8
Panique au village (2009, France) - 8/9
Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai (2009, Japan) - 6/7
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009, USA) - 7
The one I most enjoyed was actually "Panique au village", which is an absolutely insane ride. I would like to see it nominated, but it's almost certainly too obscure to stand a chance. The Serbian film "Technotise" also really surprised me, being not just well-made technically but also having a smart, futuristic story.
I take issue with your statement that 2D animation was dead. It never was, except in American theatrical animated features (even then, there were one or two exceptions every year). And it was certainly not only alive in Japan.

Comment: Very well done, you captured every single movie in it's complete package. Especially "Monsters VS Aliens", I just didn't really feel any emotion towards any of the characters; it felt like eyecandy with characters just talking...no plot. I did enjoy Seth Rogen's lines though.
I haven't had a chance to see "Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs" yet, I only heard the best things about it. The trailer kind of turned me off. "Planet 51" is not something I'll ever plan on seeing though. I'd really like to see "Astro Boy", I like how they kept some of the elements from the original manga and Anime, but took their chance to alter it; most directors and screenplay writers don't do that.
I was turned off by "Fantasic Mr.Fox" but after hearing some great reviews, I will most definetly give it a try. I've never heard of "Mary and Max", you would have figured I'd see a couple trailers? The story sounds intriguing.
